This powerful and dignified early 19th-century oil painting captures the portrait of Reverend Richard Coytmor Howard D.D., Canon of Bangor and Rector of Llangefren. Executed in 1823, this museum-worthy work reflects the refined British portraiture style of the Georgian period, with meticulous attention to facial detail, a smooth dark palette, and a stately crimson background.

The sitter is presented in formal attire, with a high white cravat and dark green jacket, styled with the elegance of the early Regency era. His confident, almost aristocratic demeanor is enhanced by subtle light falling from the left, creating a dramatic chiaroscuro effect.

On the reverse, an exceptionally well-preserved handwritten note gives a rich biographical account:

"Rev. Richard Coytmor Howard D.D. Canon of Bangor, Rector of Llangefren with Beaumaris co. Anglesey, Vicar of Llanshaeadr co. Denbigh. Chaplain to H.R.H. the Duke of Sussex. 3rd son of Richd. Howard Esq of Carmarvon by his wife Barbara Griffith of Carrogllwyd, co. Anglesey. He m. 28 Feb. 1811 Dorothea Cath, eldest dau. of Revd. Thos. Lloyd, Rector of Denbigh. Died 14 Jan 1851, aged 74. Buried at Northop, co. Flint. He was 6 ft. 5 inches in height. Now about 46 years of age."

The annotation adds genealogical and historical value, making this not just a portrait, but an artifact of British clerical and aristocratic lineage.
