Henry Peters Gray (1819–1877)

Henry Peters Gray was a prominent 19th-century American painter known primarily for portraiture, historical subjects, and genre scenes. Born in New York City, Gray studied under American painter Daniel Huntington and continued his artistic development through extended study in Europe, including Florence and Rome. He became a member of the National Academy of Design and later served as its president.

Gray holds an important place in American art history. His 1848 painting The Wages of War was the first work by an American artist acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Today, works by Gray can be found in major institutional collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Adolf Charlemagne (1826–1901)

Adolf Charlemagne, also known as Adolf Iosifovich Charlemagne, was a Russian painter and illustrator known for historical, battle, and genre scenes. Born in St. Petersburg, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where his training included historical and battle painting.

Charlemagne became an Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1859 and was awarded the title of Professor in 1867. His career included periods of artistic study and work in Munich, Paris, and Stuttgart, and his paintings are represented in the collection of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.

Fedor Encke (1851–1926)

Fedor Encke was a German painter best known for portraiture and genre painting. Born in Berlin, Encke developed a successful career as a portrait artist and became known for his refined depictions of prominent figures during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

His portrait subjects included notable American figures such as President Theodore Roosevelt, financier J. Pierpont Morgan, and diplomat John Bigelow. Works by Encke are represented in institutional collections, including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

Morris Katz (1932–2010)

Morris Katz was a Polish-born American artist known for his remarkably fast painting technique and prolific career. Born in Poland, he later settled in New York, where he became recognized for landscapes, city scenes, portraits, and other subjects painted with an expressive, rapid technique.

Katz became especially well known for his speed and extraordinary artistic output, earning recognition from Guinness World Records as one of the world’s fastest and most prolific painters. His distinctive technique often involved unconventional painting tools, including palette knives.

Finn Wennerwald (1896–1969)

Finn Wennerwald was a Danish painter known primarily for landscapes and coastal scenes. His work reflects a strong interest in the natural environment, with subjects including forests, rivers, countryside views, coastal landscapes, and scenes inspired by his travels throughout Europe.

Wennerwald was the son of Danish landscape painter Emil Wennerwald and received artistic training from his father. He exhibited in Denmark and elsewhere in Europe, and his paintings continue to appear on the international auction market. Today, he is particularly associated with traditional European landscape painting of the early and mid-20th century.
