Italian Market Street – Antonio De Vity (1901–1993)

A charming original vintage oil painting on canvas signed Antonio De Vity, depicting a lively Italian street market surrounded by colorful historic buildings, narrow passageways, and picturesque stone archways. The composition captures the warmth and character of everyday Mediterranean life, with elegantly dressed figures moving between market stalls beneath green and terracotta awnings. Sunlight illuminates the cobblestone street while the surrounding architecture creates a beautiful sense of depth and perspective.

Executed with expressive, confident brushwork and areas of richly textured impasto, the painting combines soft pastel tones with vibrant accents of coral pink, turquoise, golden yellow, and earthy brown. The artist's distinctive approach to light, architectural detail, and bustling street activity gives the scene a romantic, impressionistic quality. The artwork is presented in an ornate gold-tone frame with decorative floral and scrollwork details. Ready to hang.

About the Artist

Antonio De Vity (1901–1993), born Umberto Marone in Naples, was an Italian painter known for his romantic European cityscapes. He studied at the Liceo d'Arte in Naples and later spent several years in Paris, where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and developed a strong appreciation for the architecture and atmosphere of historic European cities.

During his time in Paris he adopted the artistic name Antonio De Vity, which became associated with atmospheric paintings of Parisian streets, Venetian canals, and other European landmarks. After returning to Naples he founded a successful art studio that became an important meeting place for artists from Southern Italy.

Beginning in the 1950s the studio gained international recognition with exhibitions in Brussels (1953), Marrakech (1955), and Madrid (1956). De Vity's paintings were exported internationally and became widely collected decorative works depicting romantic European scenes.

Later the studio was directed by his son Achille, who continued painting under the name Antonio De Vity, helping maintain the popularity of these recognizable cityscape compositions among collectors.

Collector's Note

Antonio De Vity's European cityscapes are appreciated for their romantic atmosphere, lively street scenes, and expressive use of color. This vertically oriented composition is particularly appealing for its layered architectural perspective, colorful market activity, and substantial textured brushwork. The decorative gold frame further enhances its traditional European character, making it an attractive choice for collectors of Italian impressionist-style painting and classic Mediterranean interiors.
