About the Artist – Samuel West (1810–1860)

Born in Cork, Ireland, Samuel West was a portrait and historical painter. Likely trained in Cork, he continued his studies in Rome before establishing himself in London. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1867, with additional works shown at the British Institution from 1840 to 1850 and the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1847. Known for his refined portraits and historical subjects, West lived in Southwark, Surrey in 1851 and later in Winterbourne, Gloucestershire by 1871. His works are valued for their lifelike realism and classical influence.
