About the Artist – Antonio De Vity (1901–1993)
Antonio De Vity, born Umberto Marone in Naples, dedicated his life to painting and art with a profound love for Paris, the city where his grandmother’s family originated. He studied at the Liceo d'Arte in Naples and later moved to Paris, where he lived in a small attic near Place Saint-Michel.
During his time in Paris, he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and fell in love with the places that would inspire his art for decades, including Notre Dame, the Café de la Paix, and the Moulin Rouge. It was in these early Paris years that he adopted the pseudonym “Antonio De Vity”, both to honor his beloved city and to create an aura of mystery around his work.
After returning to Naples, Umberto founded a prestigious art studio that quickly became a major meeting place for Southern Italian artists. By the late 1950s, it had grown to host over 30 students. In the late 1960s, his son Achille took over the studio and also painted under the Antonio De Vity name, continuing the tradition and style.
Antonio De Vity’s works have been widely exhibited internationally since the early 1950s, with notable exhibitions including:
-
Brussels, Belgium – 1953
-
Marrakech, Morocco – 1955
-
Madrid, Spain – 1956
Many exhibitions were held in France, further cementing his reputation as a painter of romantic Parisian cityscapes. His works have won international awards and remain highly collectible today.
