Up for sale is an antique original oil painting on canvas by listed British artist John Henry Martin (1835–1908), known as Henry Martin, depicting a charming Victorian genre scene.
Titled: His First Admiring Words (signed and dated 1870, lower right; titled on the back of the canvas).
About the Artist
John Henry Martin (1835–1908), better known as Henry Martin, was born in Camberwell, London. He began his adult life as a midshipman, sailing around the Cape of Good Hope to India, before “discovering” Newlyn in 1870.
He was the only artist listed as a resident in Newlyn in the 1871 Census and remained one of the first-generation Newlyn painters during the 1881 Census. Martin and his wife, Helen Amy, kept a tenancy at Castle Cliff until 1883, later moving to the Plymouth area. He painted in Newlyn for up to 12 years before the arrival of the main group of Newlyn artists.
-
Two of his works were exhibited at the 1889 West Cornwall Art Union Exhibition in Penzance.
-
He participated in the Newlyn Art Gallery Opening Exhibition (1895), where he was described as “the original Newlynite,” though he was then exhibiting from London.
-
Martin also exhibited at the Royal Academy (RA), the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery, and MAFA.
After the death of his first wife, Martin married Rosina Blake (Rose) and had two children. His second daughter, Nora Kate Lympany, lived until 2002 at the age of 99. Martin spent his final years at 5 Brunel Terrace, Saltash, Cornwall, beside the River Tamar, where he died. His works are now held in Penlee House Gallery & Museum and Saltash Town Council collections.
Description of the Painting
This painting depicts a romantic and tranquil woodland scene:
-
A young woman, dressed in a bonnet, white shawl, and warm-toned dress, walks slightly ahead with a calm, graceful expression.
-
Beside her, a gentleman in a dark brown coat and wide-brimmed hat leans in toward her, suggesting a quiet conversation or flirtation.
-
The dense forest canopy of tall trees and overhanging branches creates a secluded, peaceful atmosphere.
-
Soft, dappled light enhances the intimacy of the scene, while the warm tones of the couple’s clothing contrast beautifully with the cool greens and browns of the forest.
-
In the background, additional figures walk along the path, adding depth and narrative to the composition.
Martin’s work reflects the Victorian tradition of genre painting, capturing moments of everyday life with warmth and storytelling charm. His attention to detail, delicate rendering of foliage, and realistic use of light make this a particularly fine example of his art.
