About the Artist – George Whitton Johnstone (1849–1901)

Born in Glamis, Scotland, Johnstone was a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Society of Watercolourists. He exhibited his first work at the RSA in 1872, becoming an Associate in 1883 and a full member in 1895. Between 1885 and 1892, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. His landscapes—often painted in Eskdale, Annandale, and the Fontainebleau forest in France—show influence from Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Johnstone resided in Edinburgh’s Merchiston district and was the father of artist Dorothy Johnstone. He passed away in 1901 and is buried in Morningside Cemetery, Edinburgh.
