Up for sale is an unusual and unique antique 18th-century original oil painting on board depicting a gentleman in a white wig, dressed in a red jacket and white jabot, in the fashion of the period. His facial features are humorously exaggerated, giving the portrait a distinct caricature-like charm.
This work is attributed to Thomas Patch (British, 1725–1782), an English painter and engraver who lived in Italy from 1747. Known for his sharp wit and “good-humored caricature conversation pieces,” Patch enjoyed the patronage of English tourists and artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds, who included his portrait in his own satirical “School of Athens” (1751, National Gallery, Dublin).
This painting may have originally been part of a larger composition. It showcases the refined yet whimsical style for which Patch is remembered.
