1820 British Artist Finch Antique O/C painting Portrait of Elizabeth Baroness Bateman (1799-1882)

This exquisite antique English School oil painting captures the poised elegance of a young woman from the early 19th century, dressed in a richly hued burgundy gown adorned with a finely detailed lace collar. Her dark, curled hair is styled in ringlets beneath a large, golden ribbon headpiece, adding a sense of formality and grace. 

The artist has masterfully rendered the delicate features of her face with subtle shading and a serene expression, while the dark background enhances the subject’s prominence and lends the portrait a timeless, noble quality. 

The finely embossed gilt frame complements the historic charm of the piece, reflecting the refined portraiture traditions of the English School during the Georgian or Regency era.

According to the handwritten notes on the reverse, this painting is identified as a portrait of Elizabeth Bateman, dated October 1820. It is believed to depict Elizabeth, Baroness Bateman (1799–1882), who lived of London, England.

The artwork is signed and dated in the lower-right corner: “Finch 1820”, suggesting it may be attributed to a period artist, potentially Francis Oliver Finch (1802–1862), a British painter known for his refined portraiture and association with the Watercolour Society.

The painting is in overall good antique condition. The canvas shows visible age-appropriate craquelure, particularly in the darker background areas, which is typical for a painting of this age and adds to its authenticity. 

The paint surface appears stable with no major losses or flaking evident. The portrait itself is well-preserved, with the facial features and clothing retaining strong detail and color. 

The ornate gilded frame is also in good condition.
