ORIGINAL 1823 Antique 19th C. Oil on Canvas Portrait of Rev. Richard Coytmore Howard
Up for sale is an amazing original antique oil painting on canvas depicting a portrait of a Rev. Richard Coytmore Howard.
The hand-writing description on verso says:
Canon of Bangor, Rector of Llandegfan with Beaumaris in Anglesey, Vicar of Llanrhaeadr, co. Denbigh – Chaplain to H.R.H. the Duke of Sussex. 3rd son of Richd. Howard Esq. of Carnarvon by his wife Barbara Griffiths of Carrogllwyd, co. Anglesey. He married on 28 Feb. 1811 Dorothea Catlin, eldest daughter of Rev. Thos. Clough, Rector of Denbigh, and died 14 Jan. 1851, aged 74. Buried at Northop, co. Flint. He was 6 ft. 5 inches in height. Now about 46 years of age. Painted in 1823.
The reverend is shown in a three-quarter view, dressed in a dark green double-breasted coat and a high-collared white cravat, reflecting his social status and clerical position. His calm and composed expression, paired with his slightly serious gaze, conveys an air of intellect and authority.
The background is painted in deep maroon and black tones, creating a stark contrast with the lighter hues of his face and clothing. The smooth brushwork and attention to detail, particularly in his neatly styled white hair and formal attire, enhance the polished and refined nature of the portrait.
Encased in a gold-toned frame with subtle decorative details, the painting is presented with a sense of elegance and historical importance.
No visible signature on front.
The painting is in good/antique condition. Nicely framed.
