Up for sale is a compelling and atmospheric original antique oil painting on canvas, depicting a poignant genre scene. A gentleman dressed in formal black robes—likely a figure of authority or clergy—is approached by two elderly men, one kneeling and one standing, as they ask for alms. The gentleman responds by showing them his open purse, emphasizing a narrative of charity, humility, and compassion.
This work likely originates from the early 18th century (ca. 1700–1760), possibly Northern Europe—Netherlands, Germany, or Northern France—based on costume details, painting style, and composition. The treatment of light, shadow, and earthy tones is indicative of the late Baroque or early Rococo period. The subject matter and rendering also align with traditions of Dutch or Flemish genre painting.
There is no visible signature, but the quality and sensitivity of the execution suggest the hand of a trained artist, possibly from a professional studio or master-apprentice environment of the period.
Condition:
The painting has been relined (canvas replaced or reinforced) in the 19th century. It shows stable craquelure throughout and areas of restoration, including two horizontal tears across the lower figure (kneeling beggar) that have been professionally repaired. There is some bulging to the canvas and losses along the framing edges. These signs of wear are consistent with a painting of this age and confirm its authenticity.
It is now presented in a later contemporary gilt wood frame, enhancing its dramatic visual appeal while preserving its historic character.
